Why English for Drivers?

Professional drivers working in the European Union must be able to communicate in practical English in a wide range of work-related situations:

  • With dispatchers and logistics coordinators
  • At loading/unloading locations and company gates
  • During police inspections and at border crossings
  • In workshops when reporting mechanical issues
  • When asking for directions or assistance
  • In hotels, restaurants, or fuel stations during transit

Insufficient knowledge of English often leads to misunderstandings, fines, missed deadlines, or even danger on the road.

Purpose of the Globter English Course

Placement: Who Attends Which Course?

After completing the 1st English Test (part of the GIS certification), each candidate is placed into one of three categories:

Score 5 Excellent knowledge of general & job-specific English No course needed. Candidate is eligible to proceed directly to GCC certification.
Score 3+ to 4+ Adequate but improvable knowledge Assigned to Globter Course A (Advanced) – 15 hours
Score 1 to 3− Insufficient for safe & effective communication Assigned to Globter Course B (Basic) – 30 hours

Each course ends with the 2nd English test, which forms part of the final GCC certification.

Globter System = Transparent, Fair, Based on Real Skills

  • Candidates are not rejected for poor English skills.
  • Instead, they are given a second chance through structured, targeted training.
  • The GIS certificate reflects their starting level.
  • The GCC certificate reflects their progress and final readiness.

Globter Course B – Basic English for Drivers

Target Group: Candidates scoring 3- or lower on initial testing
Total Duration: 30 hours

  • 15 hours – General English (B1–B2)
  • 15 hours – Professional English for Drivers

Part 1: General English (15 hours)

Goal: Build core B1/B2 language skills with focus on speaking, understanding, and communication.

Globter Course A – Advanced English for Drivers

Target Group: Candidates scoring 3+ or higher
Total Duration: 15 hours

  • 7 hours – General English (B1–B2 review)
  • 8 hours – Professional English for Drivers

Part 1: General English (7 hours)

Goal:Consolidate existing B1–B2 knowledge and practice fluency.

English Language Test – GIS Certificate Component

Purpose : To assess whether a candidate has sufficient English skills (target: between B1 and B2 CEFR level) to:

Structure of the English Language Test (GIS)

The test consists of two parts:

1. Written Test (45 minutes)

Covers key transport-related topics and general B1–B2 level English.

  • Multiple choice vocabulary and grammar
  • Reading comprehension (e.g., driver instructions, signs, documents)
  • Sentence completion
  • Matching phrases to situations (e.g., “Where do I unload?” → “At Gate 3”)
  • Dialogues to complete (dispatcher, mechanic, border, etc.)

Oral Test / Speaking Assessment (10–15 minutes)

Individual conversation with evaluator or via audio prompts.

    Includes:
  • Introducing oneself (name, nationality, truck experience)
  • Describing a workday (timing, route, tasks)
  • Responding to simulated situations:
    • Border control (e.g., “Show me your tachograph card.”)
    • Lost on the road (asking/receiving directions)
    • Workshop communication (reporting a breakdown)
    • Dispatcher phone call (delays, load/unload issues)
    • Hotel check-in or fuel stop conversation

Scoring and Course Placement

The score is given on a scale from 1 to 5, with descriptive feedback. Based on the result:

GLOBTER CERTIFICATION STRATEGY – ENGLISH LANGUAGE MODULE

Overview

The Globter Certification Pathway includes two levels of testing for English language proficiency for professional drivers. The purpose is to evaluate and confirm whether drivers possess the minimum functional language skills needed for safe, legal, and effective work in the European Union.


1st Test – English Language Assessment for GIS Certificate

  • Part of the GIS Certificate
  • Conducted before any training
  • Divides candidates based on their current knowledge into:
    • Course B (Basic)
    • Course A (Advanced)
    • No course (direct access to next steps)

Test Structure:

  • Written Test (45 minutes):
    • General English (B1–B2)
    • Job-related vocabulary & comprehension
  • Oral Test (15 min):
    • Practical conversation (with dispatcher, police, mechanic, etc.)

Certification Result:

  • GIS Certificate issued with language score (1–5)

Globter English Courses
  • Globter Course B (30 hours) – for scores 1–3−

2nd Test – English Proficiency Test for GCC Certificate

Conducted after completing Globter Course A or B

Serves as:

  • Proof of progress after training
  • Gate to GCC certification

Structure of the GCC English Test

Written Test – 45 minutes
  • General English (B1–B2 level): grammar, comprehension, short answers
  • Professional English:
    • Transport-specific vocabulary
    • Tachograph, ADR, vehicle components
    • Role-based dialogues (port, dispatcher, workshop, hotel, accident)
Oral Test – 15 minutes
  • Simulation of:
    • Dispatcher call with delay
    • Explaining breakdown to mechanic
    • Answering police officer at roadside check
    • Lost driver asking for directions
    • Hotel check-in, meal order

    The test will mirror the GIS test format, to allow clear comparison of progress.
